Doing Research

  • Developing Your Topic
    The first step in conducting successful research is to clearly define you topic. This worksheet will help you to make a plan.
  • Take Notes
    Take careful notes (and keep track of which information came from which sources). Here's a list of fun online tools to help you.
  • Analyze Your Sources
    These helpful worksheets from the National Archives will help you to think about the primary resources you've uncovered through your research.
  • Go To the Library!!
    Do your research using the resources in this guide or the FHG Library homepage. Don't forget that asking a librarian when you're having trouble with your research may save you a lot of headaches!

Citing Your Sources

Citing your sources properly is extremely important, but can be frustrating if you don't take your time.  The following websites and tools will help you to take the stress out of your bibliography or works cited page.

  • Zotero
    A magical, free, online bibliographic tool that allows you to save and manipulate citation information for your research sources.
  • The Owl
    A website that provides tips on research and concise, easy-to-use information on most citation styles
  • Research and Documentation Online
    This website offers annotated lists of specialized sources, guidelines for citing sources in MLA, APA, Chicago, and CSE, sample papers, tips for evaluating sources, a list of style manuals, and a glossary of research terms.
